Bethany Beach Rocks!

This weekend we loaded up the White Devil and drove to Bethany Beach, Delaware to spend two sunny day's at Bill's family's beach house. The beach was fantastic, and despite the crabs nipping our ankles, we managed to body-surf some waves and serve some most excellent paddle ball rallies.

The traffic during the ride home was brutal, and I can't imagine how people with summer homes make that drive every weekend. Luckily, we had plenty of Waffle House in our bellies to make it home without too much whining.

Thanks to Jackie, Matt, Kari, Joe, Dov, and Terra for making the trip. And of course, special thanks to our host, Bill. We'll miss you, Bill!

In Hello Nurse news, this girls loves us, and we think she's rad. Joe found her page by searching for "Hello Nurse," and her page even plays our song. Fans rock!

I have copied her comments below. (Beware of teenage girl lingo!)

Huge opportunity for Teach For America

Please read below about an incredible opportunity to help Teach For America win $1 million, which would be a big help in growing our impact on the quality of education in low-income communities.

Amazon.com has selected Teach For America as one of 10 finalists for its Nonprofit Innovation Award. The organization that raises the most money through the Amazon site, in contributions ranging from $1 to $1,000, wins the Award and a matching grant of up to $1 million. Teach For America and the other nine finalists are profiled on Amazon.com through the duration of the contest, which ends September 30, 2005.

This is an incredible opportunity to raise more awareness of Teach For America and to generate critical financial support for our effort to grow to scale. We greatly appreciate anything you can do to help:

- Donate now by going to this link.
- Please forward this information to others so that they can learn more about us and support our efforts.

As you may know, Teach For America is in the midst of an inspiring effort to grow to scale - which means becoming the top employer of outstanding recent college graduates, fielding a corps of thousands teaching in urban and rural public schools across the country, and growing an ever-expanding force of alumni who have the insight and conviction to eliminate educational inequity through their long-term efforts. The funding raised through this Amazon competition will support these efforts to grow and to fuel a still more powerful movement to eliminate educational inequity in our country.

Thank you for anything you can do to help!

The Hello Nurse Creative Process

People often ask us how Hello Nurse manages to catch so much damn lightening in a bottle for every song we write. Read on for penetrating insights into the HN songwriting process.

The process can be summed up in one word: TEAMWORK. Everyone has their chance to add input and listen to feedback.

Invariably, disagreements will arise, but we try to settle things diplomatically. We're friends first, musicians second.

We are all passionate people, and tempers will flare from time to time regarding our art. Luckily, the four of us are skilled in the art of conflict-mediation.

Really, the songwriting process is more alchemy than science, but how can you argue with the results?

Alphabet Lounge tonight! (and Siren Festival tomorrow)

Tonight Hello Nurse is playing at the Alphabet Lounge.

Alphabet Lounge
Friday, July 15, 2005 at 8 PM
104 Avenue C at 7th Street

We're saying 8, but we'll probably go on closer to 9pm. We're playing with our friends Aeroplane Pageant and their friends Ruka Sky.

Tomorrow Jackie and I will be loading up the van with beach toys, which as of now includes only a cooler and a frisbee, and heading to Coney Island for the Siren Festival.

The following bands I love and can't wait to see perform:
Q and Not U
Mates of State
Dungen
Spoon
Ambulance LTD

The following bands I have had minimal exposure to:
VHS or Beta
Detachment Kit
Morningwood

The rest I haven't heard of, and I'm looking forward to it.

I can't wait to go swimming in the ocean, eat too many Nathan's hotdogs, get a crisp sunburn, and ride the Cyclone umpteen times. (This time, I will NOT be taking Jackie on the ride.)

Manhattanhenge!

Twice a year Manhattan's east/west streets are perfectly aligned with the sunset, creating a phenomenon some refer to as Manhattanhenge. On May 28 and June 11 the sun sets exactly in line with the space inbetween buildings when facing west.

Sunset is 8:28 PM this evening, so get your cameras ready!

Several reasons why the Hello Nurse show at CBGB on Friday is going to be oh so very much fun

First, the details:

Hello Nurse
live at CBGB
Friday, July 8, 2005 at 8 PM
315 Bowery at Bleecker St.

Reason #1: The line-up is fantastic.

Finally, a venue took some care in setting up a bill of similar acts that complement each other. The two bands following us are excellent power pop.

First is The Rinse. We played with The Rinse last Halloween at Asterisk in East Williamsburg, which was a PARTY for The Deli. The place was so packed I couldn't even get in the room to see them play, but the music I heard through the walls was great.

Ed walked up to the singer after their set to give friendly congrats on a set well played, to which the singer responded, "Thanks so much, if you would like to get in line behind the other groupies I'll be happy to sign an autograph," or something to that extent. (Ed booked the show for The Deli, but that didn't seem to phase this guy.) Egos aside, The Rinse play great music and are worth checking out.

Click the picture for samples.

We are also sharing the bill with Locksley. I just downloaded some of their samples today and I can't get enough. I'm looking forward to seeing them. From the pictures on their website, it looks like they are staging a fashion war!

Reason #2: We will be debuting two new songs.

We played a new song at our last show at Arlene's which was received well. We will not be playing that new song on Friday because it's slow and ballad-ish and THIS IS CBGB'S GODDAMNIT. Instead we will be playing two other brand new songs! Wish us luck.

Reason #3: It's CBGB.

We are excited, and we hope you are too. FYI, the show is 16+. Beware of teenagers.

(I have copied a hilarious exchange from MySpace below in italics. Check it out if you want to watch Mr. Sarcasm befuddle Little Miss Teen Naive.)

Reason #4: Christian has a van, and this van will carry his drum set.

This reason probably only matters to three people - myself and the two people who help me carry it to the show. Nonetheless, I am tickled to be playing my own kit.

Sarcastic Exchange from MySpace

Hello Nurse anouncement e-mail sent to several MySpace friends:
We kept seeing all of these weird t-shirts at Urban Outfitters emblazened with the mysterious letters "CBGB's." Oddly enough, it seems that a live music venue has opened up, no doubt inspired by the T-shirts. While the jury is still out on this place, we feel that it has potential and could rise to a quite respectable stature among NYC venues with time.

Some people have no sense of history. Some people re-enact Civil War battles. We just want to play on the same stage as the Ramones.

Reply from MySpace friend:
you guys....CBGB's wasn't inspired by the shirts... It's actually a really famous, grungy music venue in the city that started in the 70s. (I know you guys are performing there...frickin awesome) "Country Bluegrass Blues: Other Music For Uplifting Gormandizers" Yup the Ramones started there... So it's a big deal that you guys will be there...Congrats man...:)!

Response:
Danielle a/k/a Mr. Man-

CBGB is an urban legend. Talking Heads, Blonde, The Ramones, Television... and countless others didn't get their start at CBGB. It's a little known fact that all of them worked in retail together at "Metropolitan Couturiers" which was the predecessor of "Urban Outfitters." They dreamt up the t-shirt and sold it at a HUGE mark up. To add cache to an otherwise plain-Jane design, they made up the club they alleged inspired the shirt. All of those bands were playing country and bluegrass at the time so the name seemed appropriate to their sound.

They said the club was on the Bowery because they knew no one would visit it; you see, in the '70s was marooned in the middle of a slum. Later, as they all became famous and the Bowery was invaded at first by Yuppies, then by metrosexuals and then again by hipsters, these bands realized that it was only a matter of time before their secret was discovered. They covered their tracks by opening up the CBGB we know.

Don't believe me? Think I'm making this up? I'll prove it to you when I see you on Friday. I will peel away the false façade that those shysters put up to pull the wool over our eyes!!

Are you ready to see how far the rabbit hole goes Neo? Are you coming to the show on Friday?

I look forward to hearing from you, until then I remain...

Your Friend,
Hello Nurse

oh wow... Last semester these two girls in my creative nonfiction class "researched" the place, wrote a 10-pg paper, and presented their material to the class. I guess they didn't dig deep enough... My bad, I apologize for being wrong and I thank you much for teaching me something new:) Toodles...:)

Sooooooooooo gullible.

Air Guitar Videos

http://www.airguitarusa.com/halloffame.html

The US Air Guitar Championships obey the rules set forth by the
Air Guitar World Championships:
- Each performance is played to one minute (60 seconds) of a song chosen by the performer or the event organizers
- The 60 seconds can start anywhere in the song
- The instrument must be invisible and must be a guitar, i.e. air drums are not permitted but air bass is permitted
- Personal air roadies are allowed, but they must leave the stage before the performance begins
- Back-up bands (air or real) are not allowed

JUDGING CRITERIA

1. TECHNICAL MERIT
You don't have to know what notes you're playing, but the more the judges believe your fretwork corresponds to the music they're hearing, the better your score.

2. STAGE PRESENCE
Anyone can do it in the privacy of their bedroom. Few have what it takes to rock a crowd of hundreds or even thousands all without an instrument.

3. "AIRNESS"
The last criteria is the most difficult to define yet often the most decisive one of all. Airness is defined as "the extent to which a performance transcends the imitation of a real guitar and becomes and art form in and of itself."

... and in other news, the Gothamist recommends Hello Nurse for this Friday night. I love bloggers!

Echinsu Ocha is back!

After a wonderful week in sunny Northern Michigan, I have brought the white devil minivan back to the East Coast. Visiting my parents was awesome. The rundown:

swimming, sailing, motorcycle riding, basketball, frisbee, high-diving, backwoods fireworks shack, sitting in for a song with Leo Creek, seeing the McDuffee's and Dan's dog Baxter, beer, hammock, flying squirrels, the Detroit Taste Fest, borrowed a fixed gear bike from the King of fixies, birthday party, clean-out the van, grilled steak and trout, double-riding a mountain bike, sunburn, cousins galore! - the Collins Family, Macinac Island Fudge ice-cream, the Garden Bowl bar, and of course...

Tim and Lynne!

Echinsu Ocha ("White Devil"), the '97 Villager is back in town to become the new Hello Nurse mobile. Jackie and I have already driven to a real grocery store, and we can't get over how great it is to have that option again. The kitchen is STOCKED.
