Teach For America on CBS news

CBS news aired a short segment on Teach For America the other night. You can check it out at the link below.

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/05/24/eveningnews/main697562.shtml

We were joking about how the segment is called, "Graduating in the Age of Terror." That does seem a bit extreme, but you can see what they're getting at in the segment.

In other news, Jackie and I saw the new Star Wars movie last night, and it's taking all my energy not to talk like Yoda all day.

The Unsacred Hearts are going on after midnight, so stick around if you can. They are fantastic.

Below is a picture of Travis from the Unsacred Hearts and the man behind Serious Business. One night he was wearing this mask, and he asked, "What's Spanish for trash compactor?" Our friend Manny said it was basurero. Travis ran around all night acting like a professional wrestler while screaming, "Basurero will crush you!" It was so damn funny that I'm laughing out loud at work thinking about it.

The best part is that basurero means garbage man.

Switching Over

I made big changes in my PC usage at work this week. First, I switched my primary browser from Opera to Mozilla Firefox. I like Opera due to the convenient mouse gestures and the integrated e-mail application. Unfortunately, a number of websites don't load properly in Opera. I have used Firefox on many PC's in the past, and I figured it was time to make it my primary browser. So far I have been very happy, and it is much faster. I will have to download some extensions for mouse gesture capability, because clicking the back and forward button is just too much work. :)

VS

The second switch I made has to do with e-mail. I have been using a Verizon account from my days on McKibbin Street in East Williamsburg. That account has remained open, and I have been accessing mail both at home on my Mac and at work on my PC. This meant deleting the same spam or unimportant messages twice, once on each computer. This is tedious, and the online mail browser provided by Verizon wasn't so great. I've had a gmail account since they came out (rightiswrong), but I finally decided to switch over to a real address for everyday use.

So far I have been completely satisfied with Gmail. At first I was concerned that I was going to miss mail applications, like the Opera mail function and Apple's Mail program. I was weary of having to do all e-mailing via a website. So far Gmail has been great, and in fact, MORE capable than either of these applications. I am especially impressed with the labels, stars, and and ease of search within e-mails. I also like how Gmail displays e-mail threads in a tabbed user interface. Apple's Mail would highlight messages from the same conversation, but Gmail allows you to see them all on one screen.

One problem I did face was exporting my contacts from Opera and Apple mail to Gmail. I found some resources online that helped me convert ADR (opera) and VCF (mail) to CSV files. Now all of my contacts are in one place.

I'm excited about being able to manage my mail from any computer, as opposed to just browsing online and then doing maintenance (deleting, organizing, etc) from just one computer. For hotmail, yahoo, or gmail users out there, this is just how e-mail works. But this is all new for me, since I have always used mail applications via an e-mail address provided by my ISP.

For those of you out there who might possibly send me e-mail, please continue to send all e-mail to cts11 (at) columbia (dot) edu. This address will always forward to my e-mail address du jour. Gmail is great for now, but who knows what else might come along a few years down the line.

Avenue Q

Jackie's sister, Liz, is in town this weekend so we took her to see Avenue Q last night. I am generally not a huge fan of musicals, but this one was hilarious. She show combines puppet and human characters in a number of raunchy tunes - I would compare it to South Park meets Sesame Street.

Here are a few of the songs titles, for example.

Everyone's a Little Bit Racist
Even If You Were Gay
The Internet is for Porn
What Do I Do With a B.A. in English?
Schadenfreude (finding joy through the misfortune of others)

There is even a graphic puppet sex scene during the song You Can Be As Loud As You Want To Be When You're Making Love.

Musicals are usually a bit pricey, but I highly recommend this show to anyone who can stomach puppet sex.

In other news, I went to Recycle-a-Bicycle in Dumbo last night to see if they could figure out why my crank arms were squeaky. Turns out I just needed some grease on my chainring bolts. The guys who were working invited me back to their workshop, and they all started noticing things that needed to be tuned up.

"Oh, your rear wheel needs to be trued. Let me tighten your spokes."

"Your headset is a bit tight, let me show you how to loosen it."

It turns out every Thursday they run a bike maintenance workshop. I stuck around for a few minutes, but they were expecting a shipment of bikes to arrive do I didn't want to be in the way. I'll definitely be going back on Thursdays, because I have a lot to learn about bikes.

My bike now runs much better - I can't believe how much of a difference a loose headset makes!

Last night I rode my bike from Fort Greene to a coworker's apartment on 23rd and 8th ave for a dinner she was hosting for the admissions team.

As I was riding down Canal street, I got doored. Luckily I was biking slowly, and when flew off my bike I landed in a soft pile of garbage bags. (For all you moms out there, I WAS wearing my helmet and I had blinking lights on the front and back of my bike.)

The guy who opened the door stuck around just long enough to figure out that neither I nor my bike were broken. The cabbie even rolled down his window to see if I was still alive (how considerate!). The handlebars on my bike were twisted 90 degrees to the frame, and I banged my wrist pretty hard on the door.

It was totally this guy's fault as Canal is a bike thoroughfare. The cabbie had not yet turned off the meter, which makes the cab's lights blink, when the guy opened the door. I told him directly, "Now whenever you get out of a cab, you will always remember to take a peek over your shoulder," but I don't think he even realized that this was his fault.

Unfortunately, getting doored in New York is just a risk that bicyclists must take. It's only a matter of time until it happens again. Whenever possible I give myself a buffer in case doors do open, and I usually try to ride on the left side of one-way streets in order to make getting doored less likely since there are fewer passengers exiting cars than drivers.

Nonetheless, it happens and it hurts. And until the police start supporting things like Critical Mass instead of treating bicyclists like criminals, New York will always be a bicycle-unfriendly city.

Karaoke rules!

Last night Joe Hundley and I went to Punk / Metal Karaoke at the Continental. It was fantastic. We walked up to the bar when we got there and shared 5 shots of whiskey aka liquid courage. I have been with Joe a few other times, but I had never performed. Last night I got my chance.

I signed the list to sing Radio Radio by Elvis Costello, and apparently another girl signed her name there as well. The MC ended up calling us both up to do a duet. She was a bit shy, but she new the words. I knew most of the words, and I was, um, NOT shy. (Let the drummer leave his throne and all of a sudden mayhem breaks loose.)

I was running all over the stage and leaning over into the crowd and basically pretending to be Mike Garcia. It was a great feeling.

Joe went up later and sang some Motorhead. He was reading the lyrics from the sheet and not really working the crowd. He messed up a lyric and kind of sulked on stage during a musical interlude. I reached up and tore the lyric sheet from his hand to remove the crutch. The second verse came and he got into it. He was pumping his fists and staring into the crowd in a true Metal fury. The crowd loved it.

We stumbled home around 2am, and Joe went to the bus station this morning to catch a 6-hour Greyhound back to Penn State. Ouch.

If you ever have a change to do Punk / Metal Karaoke (every Monday at the Continetal), I highly recommend it. Karaoke is fun, but karaoke with a live metal band is funner.

Punk Rock / Heavy Metal Karaoke

Joe Hundley is in town and crashing in our marvelous guest room. Tonight we are heading to the Continental to check out Punk Rock / Heavy Metal Karaoke. I've been with Joe a few times to this event, and it is always a blast.

I have been singing Radio Radio by Elvis Costello all day trying to learn the words. Tonight is the 6th anniversary of PRHM Karaoke, so one of the regulars may be doing this song instead. I have never done karaoke before, but I have a feeling that I would really enjoy it.

This event used to take place at Arlene's Grocery, but the management there sucks so the event now takes place at the Continental. I prefer Arlene's as a venue, but the band is so amazing that the crowd will follow them wherever they go.

Time Traveler Convention!

Check out this article in the New York Times today. A student at MIT has organized the first ever time traveler convention in hopes that time travelers from the future will come visit.

Not only is this a great idea, but imagine the possibilities of crashing this party? How many students dressed in tin foil will be arriving at the convention? Wow, imagine the pranking possibilities.

Amal Dorai, the organizer of the event, does a great job of keeping things in perspective. "Certainly, if no one from the future shows up, that won't prove that it's impossible."

But, the best part of the article has nothing to do with Dorai's convention.

The picture below is followed by this caption: David Nelson demonstrated the motorized couch in his M.I.T. dorm, which also features the "pizza button."

If you think about it, going to MIT must be so much fun.
