HOLLA! ween

I thought everyone else in my office was going to dress up today. Apparently very few people remembered to actually make a costume. That's ok though, because there is a constant line of people waiting at my cube to see my costume. It's fun, and it's keeping me from getting a work done, which is nice.

Jackie and I pretty much finished getting the place ready for tonight. We have a few more little touches to finish, but for the most part the place is ready to rock.

The best part of the evening was carrying the keg up 3 flights of stairs. The keg delivery people delivered the thing, but our elevator was broken. Jackie was kind enough to rush over after work to meet them. If I were her (which I'm not) I would have flirted them into carrying it up to the loft. Instead, Jackie and I had to do it ourselves. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't any walk in the park. People better polish it off tonight, because I do NOT want to carry that thing back down with any leftover beer in it.

Trick or treat, smell my feet, give me something good to eat.
If you don't, I don't care, I'll pull down your underwear!

moving furniture in my sleep

Jon Yang and I worked our behinds off last night getting the loft ready. We were hanging fabric, testing lights, moving furniture, hanging art, cleaning, vacuuming... the works. Of course, I still have plent of work left ahead of me. But I would undoubtedly be way behind if it weren't for Jon.

Alex Chung also came over to deliver his technics 1200 turntable, so the DJ setup is going to work! Thanks again, Alex.

Thanks to Bill for the kinds words in his blog. I'm glad he appreciates the parties we throw - because I often work way too hard just to have a few people over to my place for some fun-time. Do not fret this time - this one is going to be a dousy.

gettin' the joint ready

Jon Yang is on his way over to help me set the loft up. It's coming along, but we have a long way to go before Friday's throw-down. Luckily my costume is all finished so I don't have to worry about that anymore.

I've been reading applications all week at work. It's been very interesting. I can't help but be impressed by some of the people applying. Of course there have also been a few gems written by people who probably won't make it. This one girl wrote her essay about her breasts! That one made it's way around the office. She wrote an essay about how an obstacle she has tried to overcome is being objectified because of her figure. According to her essay - Yes, they're real. (I joke, but her point was well argued and her writing was strong.... like her back.) Sorry, I couldn't resist.

If you haven't replied to my evite yet you suck.

thank you, D-S-T!

Oh my goodness, if there was any weekend in which I need an extra hour of free sleep, it is this weekend. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Daylight Savings Time. However, DST changes in the spring and we lose an hour - and for that I'd like to give a preemptive F U!

Friday night was fantastic. Went to the Brooklyn Brewery (home of Brooklyn Lager, etc) in Williamsburg with some folks from work. Beers were 2 for $5, we ordered a pizza, sat on picnic tables, and the crowd was a mix of tragic hipsters and young families. 5 year old kids running around next to people who spent the past 5 years perfecting their bedhead - it was an odd combination.

Later that night Jackie and I went to Bowery Ballroom to see Radio 4. The crowd there was even hipper - avg hair perfection time = 6 years. We were originally trying to see Ted Leo and the Pharmacists at CBGB's, but that place was so sold out that all access CMJ badges couldn't even get you in. I was excited to see Radio 4, so it wasn't the end of the world that we missed Ted Leo.

The opening band for Radio 4 was Elephant, and the first half of their set was good enough to make me start thinking of downloading it when I got home. Then the end of their set came, and they played their popular songs. Ugh. Nevermind. The lead singer thought he was the best thing since the revival of trucker hats. The drummer was an animal though, and I spent most of the set studying and admiring him.

Radio 4 came on and blew the roof off the place. I had to be at work at 8:30am Saturday, so we were originally only going to stay for the first few songs of the set. Now way. We didn't leave until the last song. Radio 4 is definitely one of my new favorite bands. If the Clash were still around and like to play dance rock - then they would be Radio 4. Their album Gotham is safe according to RIAARadar.com, so go pick it up!

Saturday I went into work to start reading Teach For America applications. The application deadline was Friday at midnight, so we started right away with a training to learn how to score apps on Saturday morning. I spent all day reading 24 applications yesterday, and I have 24 more to read before tomorrow morning. This is going to take most of the week to finish. It's very interesting reading applications from so many bright and capable people. We have a very specific rubric for scoring applications, and an applicant must earn 8 points on the scale to be passed on for a potential interview. It breaks my heart to read an application from someone who obviously wants to commit their next two years to TFA and then reject them because their application was lacking in one specific area. For all of you out there who receive a rejection letter, please realize that this does not necessarily speak of you as a person, but more the extreme specificity of applicant the organization is looking for.

On a bright note, some amazing amazing people are applying to Teach For America this year. The first application I read was from the Student Body President of Georgetown.

And HUGE thanks to Alex Chung who may be letting me borrow his turntable this weekend. Thanks Alex!

now you can roadrage from home!

NYCTMC.org
I found this site while surfing the NYC.gov page. You can get live streaming video or snapshots of intersections throughout the city. This is really awesome. I reminds me of some of the scenes from The Italian Job.

Thanks to Jon, Jess, and Drew (and all of Jon's friends) for making last night a fun night out. Too bad Jackie couldn't make it... and too bad I had to go to work this morning on 4 1/2 hours sleep... and too bad I had to fight on the phone with Sprint all morning. I really hate sprint right now. If I had some money I would go to Verizon.

do you have a turntable?

I'm kind of in a jam for the halloween party. One of my turntables only comes through on one channel. I'm hoping that Jess will be able to fix it, but I'm trying to cover my bases. Does anyone out there have a turntable I can borrow next Friday night? Do you know anyone who has one who might let me borrow it. Pleeeeeease??

Dig down to the bottow of your hearts and help a party out.

RIAA Radar

I just found out some great information at Downhillbattle.org. There is a site called RIAARadar.com where you can check to see whether or not an album is distributed by the Big 5 record companies (Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, EMI Group, Warner Brothers Music, BMG Entertainment).

For example, I just searched for Ted Leo because I love his albums and I want to buy them soon. Fortunately, RIAA Radar says Hearts of Oak and Tyranny of Desire are safe to buy since the albums are distributed by Lookout Records. But, if you want to buy some of that funky-fresh Good Charlotte horseypoo, RIAA Radar will give you a warning because that crap is distributed by Sony.

Some of you might be wondering, "What's wrong with buying an album from a major label? Most of the music I listen to comes from a major label..." Go to Downhillbattle.org and educate yourself.

... and speaking of horseypoo

Happy Birthday Jon Yang!

dj's dj's everywhere

All up in my underwear. I have gotten so many replies from DJ's wanting to spin at the costume party. I have to keep telling them that I think they are seriously overestimating this party. Nonetheless, I think there are a lot of bedroom DJ's out there who just really want to spin for people.

I got DJ Skeet to spin, then he pulled in his friend DJ Colin Flava, and now Mr. Flava is trying to pull in his friend Dan. I had to tell them that DJ Skeet can spin for a little over an hour for some hard, loud dance music. Otherwise, Flava has to keep the volume down to a conversational level. I don't think there's enough room in the night for this Dan guy.

Other responses: One guy said he would do it for $100. Another guy wrote this huge history of what he spins and where he has worked. I told him he might as well find a bigger/better manhattan party with all those skills. Another guy from Italy wrote me:

"hey whats up..I am a DJ from italy.. I have lots of music... and willing to spin anything you like...I have my own equipment....too if you are unsure about someone else using your own equipment.... LEt me know man.. this seems pretty fun.. I have plenty of expierence.. Radio DJ for a year... I played some z100 gigs... let me know man...

This guy, DJ Broadway, is by far the most entertaining response. He even sent me a word attachment with his Top 10 Playlist for October 2003. Apparently this guy was the head DJ and sound engineer for Club Broadway (Broadway at 96th) from 1985 to 1987. I was 6 years old!

I guess I should have realized how many DJ's there are out there when I found 4+ DJ's willing to spin for free at Minor Culture 2 - which was terribly illegal. If it was so easy to find people willing to put their ass on the line, there must be TONS of people ready to get your ass shakin' in a legal way.

I received this post as an email reply to my post asking for a dj. Will anyone out there kindly pay for this for our costume party? hahahaha
It's amazing the kind of replies you'll get from a posting on craigslist.

can delegate them to your maid whille adding to the
holiday spirit.

DJ SKEET

What did that take, an hour? So, now we have a DJ for the Costume Party. His name is DJ Skeet (Entropika Records) and he's going to spin us some tech-house, deep-house, and whatever else you want. We have corresponded, and he seems like a nice guy. When you see him on the decks, be sure to mix him a drink. For anyone who thought this was going to be a get together you have been warned. This might actually become a full-on Party. Yay.

Ok, you may now get back to working on your costumes.

9:23 AM

Feel free to email this to anyone you think might be interested:

http://newyork.craigslist.org/brk/muc/18037329.html

(10/31)
I'm throwing a Halloween costume party at my loft (248). It's not
going to be the biggest party in the world, but it looks to be a good
time with good people. At the very least the place will be well
decorated, the sound system will be LOUD, and everyone there will be
in costume.

I have turntables, so I'm looking for someone who spins house, garage,
d'n'b or basically anything electronic to spin for an hour. If you
live in the neighborhood you could just drop by for a set and take
off. You don't have to be an x-ecutioner, just have some good
records. I don't have any money to offer, but you're welcome to drink
your fill, smoke your fill, and pass a hat around (I'm sure these
folks will all be kind, and I'll help peer-pressure them for you.)

And whether you're a DJ or not, if you're going to be in the
neighborhood and you're in costume, stop by: 248 McKibbin, 3M.

enjoy your day,
Christian

party all weekend

This weekend was Columbia's 250th birthday Homecoming celebration. I went up to the football game and to a concert on campus with Matt Davis, Eliel, and Alex Chung. We ran into tons of familiar faces, and it was a great time.

Wycleff performed a largely forgettable show, probably one of the worst performances I've ever seen by a big name star. He kept playing singles by other artists, and he tried to rhyme at least one lyric every minute with 'Columbia University.' Columbia University is the place to be, dat shit aint free, the students form a community, go climb a tree, I got a B in marijuana-ology - Put Your Hands In The Air-EEEEE! It was laughable at some points.

After a warm up at the West End and a stop at 1020 we piled in a cab and went to Williamsburg for Emily Berger's birthday party at Doug's apartment. It was a cool party, and we ran out of gas at some point and Matt, Jaime, and Jackie came back to my place for some delivery, music, and nerf basketball.

The best part of the weekend was our decision to throw a Halloween costume party at my loft on Halloween. This is going to be a REAL Costume Party - none of this "Oh, I didn't have time for a costume" BS. Please don't show up unless you have an actual costume. And if you run into someone who has a kick-ass costume, by all means invite them!

If you want to come and have a rocking good time, then please go to the Evite and sign up. Sign up now and start a critical mass!

250

This weekend Columbia University is having all kinds of festivities to celebrate its 250th birthday. Friends from all over will be in town, and I'm looking forward to it. Matt Davis is crashing at my loft. Eliel will be in town. Oh my goodness, the whole crew will be back together and bad things will probably happen, as usual. And by bad I mean good, I hope.

Tonight I have happy hour with the crew from work, then I'm going to meet Matt to help him unload his stuff at my place. At some point I have to jet uptown to help Jackie remove a gnarly splinter from her foot. That girl has some serious splinter problems. From the sounds of it, it's one of those deep, sharp, thin, piercing splinters that you can't see but surely can feel. I don't even want to think about it anymore, it's making me wince.

For the rest of the weekend I have to fit in a band practice, Carrie Swanson's birthday party Sat. night, time with Jackie, partying with the guys, and hopefully a little bit of sleep in there somewhere. And I guess I should wash the 2 foot pile of dishes in my sink before Nathaniel gets back.

Btw, Hello Nurse had it's first completely loud practice in a while last night. Nathaniel wasn't there, but he would have been bored anyway - we had to teach Joe the new bass parts. Ed, Joe, and I really worked on our parts for a few songs, and they sound better than ever. A new song we are writing will be our best yet, without a doubt. It's going to be a single.

Me excited.

Dear Roger Clemens,

I would like to offer you my sincerest sympathies on your loss tonight. While I am not a fan of your team or you as a person, I have great respect for your career and accomplishments. You have proven to be an outstanding pitcher in the American League, and I congratulate you. Unfortunately, tonight is not your night. The Yankees Dynasty has been remarkable; but just like the Bush Administration, all establishments fueled by money, power, and greed will eventually fall. This is not to say the Red Sox are any kind of Angels (they haven't won the World Series yet), but they will take over American League pennant honors later this evening. I hope you have prepared yourself mentally for the let-down you will feel later tonight. If you need comfort, I'm sure you can find a soft spot to rest your tear-soaked cheeks in Don Zimmer's jowls.

I wish you many delightful years to come in your retirement, which effectively starts Friday, October 17, 2003.

Yours truly,
C-Sparls

This is a post-Burning Man party. Jackie and I (along with my cousin Brooke, Bill, and Jaime) went last year. It was hands down the best party I've ever been to. Jackie and I went as Mr. & Mrs. Winter. Mark the date and check it out. Also, that same weekend my building is having an Open Studios event. I will be showing short films by Alex Chung and Eric Lane in my loft. Hello Nurse will be playing in someone else's loft. Definitely swing by.

superchunk
Don't every forget Superchunk. I listen to so much new music, but not much rocks like Superchunk rocks. I saw them live back in high school, back before I ever knew who they were. They were opening for Belly. I don't even like Belly. I just wanted to body surf and mosh for 2 hours. God Bless Superchunk. on the bike

Today I slept until I couldn't sleep anymore. I woke up at 11, felt rested, and decided to go back to sleep anyway. (Sorry, I just had to rub that in for everyone who went to work today.)

I have run into Manny Fishman a number of times in the past couple months, and every time I see him he's on his bike. We usually chitchat for a few minutes, and he always invites me to go on a bikeride sometime soon. This afternoon I finally took him up on it. He came by my place, we ate peanut butter 'n' jelly sandwiches, and then we made a quick stop at the Nelson Bicycles. I figured if I'm going to be riding my bike as much as I do, I should probably buy a helmet. 29 dollars later I am now a safer biker!

Manny and I biked all the way to Prospect Park. After living for 6 years in Manhattan I feel I have a solid knowledge of the city, but Brooklyn is like a whole new world to me. I am so curious to learn about it's different neighborhoods, so my head was on a swivel trying to suck in as much info as possible as we were biking around. Prospect Park is beautiful, and we cruised around the entire park. When we got off our bikes to sit on the lawn for a while my legs felt like jelly. I didn't think I was that tired, even though we had bee on our bikes for an hour. Apparently I was.

Manny showed me his place, near Washington & Fulton, and after hanging out there I cruised back along Flushing to my place. I am getting a feel for my bike, getting more comfortable on it everyday. I'm looking forward to taking it out more often before the weather gets too cold.

I downloaded two albums last night - the new Strokes album and an album by The Books called The Lemon of Pink. Bash the Strokes all you want for their corporate financed rise to the top, but I will not be ashamed to say that I like their music. It's easy to hate the Strokes people, I know that. But this new album is quite fun. I've certainly had my fun listening to it. Call me a scenester, call me a poser, call me anything you want. But I enjoy the new Strokes album. I'm not saying it's album of the year or anything, but I'll throw it on while I'm washing the dishes.

The Books is a band I have never heard of. I just saw a rating on Pitchforkmedia that was higher than 7 so I decided to try to download it. I also tried to download the new Ted Leo album (I can't wait to hear that one!), Superchunk Cup of Sand, Sloan Action Pact, Ladybug Transistor, and the new album by The Darkness. If you have any of these albums please add a comment and tell me what you think.

Back to The Books. I'm listening to it right now. This album is an experimental whirlwind of soothing bluegrass-style guitar lines with tick-tocky rhythm patterns. Some songs have electronic rhythms that flick and start like a fly buzzing around the room looped with the constant ticking of a metronome. Other songs have delicate acoustic guitar lines on top of strings and glitch-style rhythm tracks. One track called PS is just a series of laughs and 'um's by a male a female voice. This stuff is very difficult to describe, and as I look back on what I just wrote I don't think I did a good job. This album is very friendly, mellow but not sleepy, but it has the edge of experimental trip-hop. I definitely recommend it.

I guess I was jinxed when I made fun of people for working on Columbus Day. About 2 minutes after I wrote that my phone rang. It was a school-based team member at Georgetown looking for some information. I guess I left my phone number on my email auto-reply, so she called me at home. I had to access my work email and dig through it. Fun, real fun. That's what I get!

french connection

I just finished watching the French Connection. It was a great movie, mostly for the camera work and the way it captured New York in the 70's. I saw lots of street scenes of areas I know (Dumbo, Brooklyn Bridge, Wards Island) and it was erie to see these places in the 70's. New York really was a rough place back then. I rented the flick because it was supposed to have one of the best car chase scens, but I wasn't very wowed by it. But as I think back, I guess it was pretty amazing - Gene Hackman in a car-jacked car ("Police business, I need your car!") chasing a hijacked elevated subway. The movie was pretty good, and I'd recommend it especially in you live or have spent time in New York but are too young to remember the 70's.

Today we had the first real Hello Nurse practice in a while. We went to Dumbo to practice, but the practice room we were going to use was double booked. So, we ended up carting stuff over to an office building next to the Brooklyn Bridge where our new bass player, Joe, works.

The office is on the 11th floor, and it looks out over the bridge, lower Manhattan, and the statue. Impressive view to say the least! We rocked out for about 4 tunes and damn did it feel good to play loud. I hadn't played loud in months. But, as the story usually goes, someone in a nearby office knocked [banged] on the door and made us shut up. It looks like we might be able to use the other practice space in Dumbo on a regular basis is we set stuff up. The space is in the basement of a warehouse, and I guess there are a few band practice rooms down there. No windows, but the place was full of amps and rugs and lamps - a nice little cave for getting loud and rocking out.

Actually, the practice space is at the exact location of the Condiment Wars that Matt Davis, Jon Yang and I went to a few months back. It took me a few moments to realize this, because the place looked different since it wasn't splattered with 2 inches of wet slime. Dumbo is a pretty cool neighborhood - but it's not really too cheap of a place from what I could tell of the cafes, galleries, and people walking around.

For all of you who have to work tomorrow on Columbus Day, I offer you my condolences. Suckers.

free haircut

Today I went to the Richard Stein Salon for a free haircut I scored on Craigslist. A new stylist there is trying to build up male clientele so she was offering free haircuts (+tips). Apparently she was bombarded by replies, so she had to delete the ad within a day of posting. But since I'm the Craigslist guru, I had already replied within 10 minutes of posting her ad.

The salon was an old-lady place, but the girl Alex who cut my hair was about my age. I think she did a pretty good job. She used scissors only, and the philosophy of the salon was to give haircuts that look good without styling and that will grow in well. While you may not look all dolled up when you leave, your hair will grow in nice. This is perfect for me since I get my hair cut once every time the Tigers win 2 games in a row.

Tonight Jackie and I, along with Jon Yang and possibly ARoss (w/ ballet hottie in tote) are going to a party on the first floor of my building. The party is called The McKibbin Street 34th Annual "Don't be a Douchebag on Columbus Day Weekend" Celebration 2003. It should be a good time. They have a 2000sf duplex loft. Last year the joint was packed, according the guys, so I'm hoping this year is no exception.

Ok, off to the Latino Supermarket to pick up some beers.

[oh crap, ramirez (cubs) knocked in his 6th RBI of the game just now!]

So, for all you folks reading this who actually know me, please update your records:

baseball

Powered by audblogClick here for LIVE crowd noise from my seat in upper tier section 15 (right field), Game 2, ALCS. powered by audblog

I had a great time at the game last night. Playoff baseball is so exciting. Unfortunately, the Red Sox lost, but we still had a great time cheering, singing, drinking, and people watching. Two girls sitting next to us were also Bosox fans, so that was cool. Unfortunately, one of the girls got into a nasty cat fight with a Yankee fan behind her, complete with hair pulling, scratching, the B-word, and a useless boyfriend who thought it was more fun to squirt water on the girls than break up the fight. All the while class-less Yankee fans screamed CAT FIGHT CAT FIGHT CAT FIGHT. Some officers came over and removed all of them from the stadium.

Leaving the stadium was a mess, and I was glad not to be wearing any Red Sox gear. The poor Boston fans who sported all red were mercilessly heckled by drunken Long Islanders and Staten Island wanna-thugs.

But despite all the nonsense, watching the game was great. The energy in the stadium was amazing. I couldn't imagine being at a Game 7! That must be unreal.

Thanks again, Jackie!

bear it

Jackie and I are going to the baseball game tonight. I'm so excited! Unfortunately, I'm also completely exhausted after staying up every night all week watching baseball. I feel like I've barely slept at all. Friday should be fun.

Also, I think this is a funny story. I'll just copy the email I sent to Drew:

I was at one of the office printers today printing out some hefty documents when I noticed some flyers that a coworker was printing out. I asked her if I could take a look, because I hadn't seen the flyers with the highlighted letters. (I always use the flyers with normal letters - I guess I just prefer simplicity.)

Anyway, I looked at the highlighted letters and read them alone, and I started cracking up. I took it around the office, and a few people started to get it once I explained it to them.

My boss wrote an email to the girl who printed them and I, and the marketing team is getting to work changing it. No one had even noticed. Apparently this coworker and I "win the prize for being the best eyes in the office."

This is the kind of thing I'm sure you would appreciate as much as I do.
"Join Teach For America, and see if you can 'bear' it for 2 years."

The flyer I was refering to says "BE A PART OF IT." Some of the letters are highlighted on the flyer by emphasizing the negative space behind them. The underlined letters were the ones highlighted: "BE A PART OF IT"

If you read just the highlighted letters, it says BEAR IT.

I got a chuckle out of that one. Marketing did NOT get a chuckle out of that one.

"We have tough choices ahead...The first choice that we must make is the one that will determine our success. Shall we rebuild our state together or shall we fight amongst ourselves, create even deeper divisions and fail the people of this state? Well, let me tell you something - the answer is clear. For the people to win, politics as usual must lose."
From an article on Salon.com

Sounds like a good political stance, right?

Now replace the words this state with California, and read it in the voice of Detective John Kimball. Wait, I'm sorry, I meant Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Having trouble remember Arnold's voice?
Arnold Schwarzenegger Soundboard

I'm sorry, but I have lost some serious faith in the people of this country. Can California have two recalls in two years? I hope Arnold gets his act together and destroys the $8 billion California budget deficit just like he fucked up the T-1000.

Sammy Sosa, bottom of the 9th homerun with 2 outs. Are you kidding me??

Here's an ad I put on Craigslist.

Don't you want a BMX to cruise around town in style? I graduated to the granny-10speed. If I want to hurt myself anymore, I'll just jump on my skateboard.

This story is full of gems!

From a Cub to a Menace, and Now a Mystery

Apparently some guy in Harlem kept beasts in his apartment. In particular, he had a 400lb Bengal Tiger and a five-foot-long alligator-like reptile called a caiman. The SWAT team removed the tiger by repelling from an upstairs apartment, shooting the tiger with a tranq gun through the window, and hauling it out with 10-guys holding a stretcher.

Here are some hilarious quotes from the article:

Howard Marder, a spokesman for the housing authority, which oversees public housing, said officials were trying to determine when the apartment was last inspected and how a tiger was not detected.

Raven Eaton, who works at the nearby Associated Supermarket, said Mr. Yates would come into the store every afternoon to buy several bags of raw chicken.

He continued to feed the tiger by throwing raw chickens through a door opened just narrowly enough to keep a paw the size of a lunch plate from swiping through, neighbors said.

All this talk about the tiger, and the news on TV barely makes any mention of the Caiman also living in the apartment. Could you imagine being the ConEd guy coming to take a meter reading at that apartment?

More Painting Today!

I added some pink to a small wall that is up high on my sleep loft. Nathaniel is painting his room Canary yellow at the moment. Our place looks 100 times better than it did this time yesterday. Last night I said I didn't like the magenta, but overnight it dried much darker - it looks great!

Brad and Vanessa came by today and picked up their stuff, so now we're all set to go getting this place in order. Also, a loft down the hall is having a sale this week. They are selling an 8 ft. ladder (the perfect size for our place) for $40. I left a note under their door telling them I want it. I had no idea how expensive ladders are - well over $100. So, this is a great deal. After borrowing the ladder we're using now from Mike and Vandana down the hall, we realized how important it is to have one.

Jackie just got a haircut as a hair model for a salon that was giving a class. I can't wait to see what it looks like. She said that it's very different, but that she likes the way it feels. So, that being said, I'm gonna jump in the shower and then head up to see her.

Busy Day Today!

Went to brunch with Jackie at Life Cafe, the only cool restaurant in the neighborhood. The food was fantastic. I think we'll definitely be going there a lot this year.

On the way home from the restaurant Jackie and I decided to walk up Flushing a ways. We got some keys made, and then we stumbled upon Oriental Lumber Company. It was this huge hardware store with lumber, paint, tools, carpet - like a mini-Home Depot.

So, we actually found some Oops cans, but of course they were some weird colors. We ended up getting Magenta and Pink in Oops cans, and then we had a nice royal Blue mixed up for us. We bought the tarps, rollers, tray, broom handle (to extend the roller), a brush, and some mixing sticks. We carried it all back to my place just in time for band practice.

We tried out 2 bass players today and they were both excellent. So, we have some hard decisions to make this week.

Tonight Nathaniel and I painted the walls in the loft. We borrowed a ladder from some kind people down the hall and went to town. We painted 2 walls blue and 2 walls magenta. The magenta kind of clashes with the rug on the floor, but the are in different parts of the loft. I'll have to wait and see if I like it. No matter what, it's definitely nicer than the way it was with the splotchy spackle. We were pretty lazy, though. We just painted right over some spackle tape. Oops! But, for the most part, it looks pretty awesome.

I'm excited to do something with this pink paint. I think I might try to paint the bathroom pink. We'll see if Nathaniel is up to it. It will make the bathroom a shocking room to be in, that's for sure. I'll have to sleep on it.

Speaking of sleep, that sounds great right about now!

Another Craigslist Score!

piece of crap PA for sale AND MORE! - $50

Date: 2003-10-01, 7:56PM
This is a TOA MX-104 ( 4 channels + ) that works but is old and crappy, and some big old speakers in wood cabinets from god knows where, it doesn't sound good but is functional for practice and for 50 bucks how can you lose ( besides having a big crappy PA system taking up space in your rehearsal room )? If you want it give me a call or e-mail back. Thanks, Josh 718 757 5xxx

Josh totally hooked me up. The powered mixer alone is worth well more than $50. But we also got some ENORMOUS speakers. They don't sound very good, but hey, we can throw them out if we need to. Or, nothing wrong with extra monitors.

I'd like to give an extra-special shout out to Andy Ross, who hooked me up with the cash to make the purchase. The band funds are currently sitting in a jar on Ed's dresser, so I didn't have the bling to score the gear. The guy Josh lives right across the street from Andy (literally, RIGHT across the street) so I was able to swing by to visit Andy in the neighborhood. He has a kind soul, and he will also have all his money back plus some interest in beer.

I love Craigslist. What are the chances that the guy would live right across the street from the guy I'm borrowing money from to make the purchase? Unbelievable.

So, Ed just needs to buy us some speaker cables tomorrow and we be 99% better at pissing off the neighbors.

Here's a pic of model powered mixer I got. Enjoy!

Poor Red Sox fans.

I was over at ARoss's place last night watching the Red Sox vs. A's. There were about 8 rowdy BoSox fans crammed in Andy's tiny livingroom. We had a great time, but I was so tired by the time the 9th inning finished around 1am. I had to go home, so I missed all the extra innings excitement. I'm glad I didn't stay up even later just to watch them lose on a 12th inning bunt.

Jackie cooked me dinner last night - Thanks Jackie! It was so good. I ate the last of it for lunch today. We also watched Real Women Have Curves. It's a pretty good movie, but I felt like it ended before the story was actually finished. There were lots of things introduced at points in the movie that should have come back around at the end. For example, the protagonist Latina teenager was going to Columbia at the very end of the movie. Her summer boyfriend, who she assumed she would never see again, went off to Teacher's College. Why didn't they reunite at the end? The protagonist's sister gave her a beautiful red dress midway through the movie - but nothing ever became of this dress. Despite all that, and the fact that the same music samples were played over and over, the movie was entertaining. Check it out if you get a chance.

Ok, back to work so I can go home!
